Caged
    by Anitra L. Freeman

    Among safe paths
    I went astray
    for no reason I remember.
I found a small wildflower valley

    with a silver cage.

My feet stood in spring grass.
    My hands sought opening
    between the bars.

    I remembered.
    I built the cage myself
    to hold a wondrous thing.
    The trout of wisdom,
    silver-sided queen of fishes.

    Leaning against the bars
I slid slowly to the earth.
