I became homeless in Seattle in 1995 at the end of an eight-month depression -- and forty-eight years of undiagnosed bipolar disorder (manic depression). I found stability and community through Seattle's mental health outreach program, Access, and through the many strong grassroots homeless networks in Seattle. I am now the editor of the StreetWrites Writing Workshop, the Kalliope Poetry Workshop, the Unicorn Pen Writing Forum, the Great Speckled Bird Homeless Column, and the Absolute Authority on Homelessness. I am one of the editors of the Real Change homeless newspaper in Seattle Washington and I began the website for the North American Street Newspaper Association. I continue to be an active member of the grassroots homeless groups SHARE (Seattle Housing & Resource Effort) and WHEEL (Women's Housing Equality & Enhancement Effort) and maintain the websites for both.
