I felt compelled to “do something” to confirm my self worth during a period of homelessness. I began hand quilting because it comforted me; it helped me remain calm amidst chaos. Wherever I sat quilting, indoors or outdoors, people approached and initiated an exchange. They would often share memories of their own comfort quilts, tenderly fashioned by someone who loved them. Some people would bring patches of fabric for my quilts. I began to build a circle of support, one person at a time. I realized that I could “make something out of nothing” with my own situation, just as scraps grow to become a quilt. My hope, confidence, and self-esteem grew, as my quilts became increasingly complex. Quilting has become a metaphor for reconstructing my life in a beautiful way.
