Navigation Shouldn't Be a Mystery

There are reasons for using a standard set of code to link a webring, besides the sheer egotism of webring managers.

  1. For the webring to work as designed, the links must be as written.
  2. For visitors to the ring to be able to surf without confusion, each ring should be easily identifiable.

You must have either the Javascript navbar or HTML navigation code on your page, for the webring to work.

If you have already installed the Javascript code for the new Webring navbar, the bar for the Mystery Readers Ring will appear on your page as soon as you are accepted.

If you need the Javascript code for the navbar:

Lynx (text-only) and some older graphic browsers, however, cannot use Javascript. For this reason, I used to ask memebrs to use HTML code in addition to, or instead of, the Javascript code. However, Webring.com has remembered the NOSCRIPT tag. Browsers that cannot use Javacript will, instead, use everything between the NOSCRIPT and the /NOSCRIPT tags.

The current coding between those two tags provides a link to a page that will display all your navbars. If you want to display the navbars directly on the current page, you can use the HTML version of the navbar.

To get the HTML navbar, follow the above steps, but when you get to the page displaying the SSNB code, scroll to the bottom and click the word "here" at the end of the sentence "Members who wish to use the HTML version of this nav bar should go here."

If you use the Javascript code, the navbar for each new webring you join will automagically appear in the "stack" and if Webring or I make any changes to the ring code, they will be also appear automagically. If you use the HTML form, you will have to manually insert the HTML navbar for each new ring, and change it yourself if there are any changes to the code.

There is a way to get the best of both worlds. You can keep the Javascript code, including the table between NOSCRIPT and /NOSCRIPT, that is provided by Webring. Insert the HTML navbar provided by Webring after the last in the NOSCRIPT section. Then the automagically maintained navbar stack will appear for your visitors who use Javascript, and the link to the Webring-created page AND your manually maintained HTML stack will appear for visitors who don't.

If you wish to use the older "pretty code" instead of the navbar, you can copy it here. I have updated the links for the new sysyem. You will have to manually change the code, however, to insert your own site information.

There are three options:

  1. Table plus graphics
  2. Graphics without table
  3. Text-only

I hope this provides enough flexibility for everyone. You may need to adjust the font color for visibility on your own page. If you need to make any other changes, please contact me first.

The code that is given to you when you apply to join is already customized for your webpage. Using that code is easier than copying what's here and modifying it. If you do use what's demonstrated here, you will have to:

  • Replace my name with your name.
  • Replace my email address with your email address.
  • Replace my site ID with your site ID.
  • Replace the location of the images with your own location. (This you will have to do even with the customized code.)

I do not insist that you use webring graphics -- this is a readers ring, and the emphasis is on text content. If you want to use your own graphics, please check with me first -- I want to make sure visitors to the ring don't become confused about which ring they are on. I may make yours the standard graphics for the ring!

If you do choose to use my graphics, please copy them to your own server. The one change you will need to make to the customized code is to put the correct-for-you directory and filename in the logo image tag.

To copy images:

  • Place your mouse cursor over the image.
  • On IBM PC: click right mouse button
  • On Macintosh: hold down mouse button
  • Select "Copy image to disk" from the popup menu
  • Use whatever file transfer method you use to upload files from your computer to your server
